Accommodations change how a student learns what is being taught.
A modification changes what a student is taught or expected to learn.
- Accommodations can help kids learn the same material and meet the same expectations as their classmates. If a student has reading issues, for example, she might listen to an audio recording of a text. There are different types of classroom accommodations including presentation (like listening to an audio recording of a story) and setting (like where a student sits).
-Kids who are far behind their peers may need changes, or modifications, to the curriculum. For example, a student could be assigned shorter or easier reading assignments. Kids who receive modifications are not usually expected to learn the same material as their classmates.
Accommodations and resources for children with Autism:
-Headphones, Boardmaker/google images (for visual schedule), sensory room/integration, fidget tool box, break cards, edible reinforcement (with parent permission), visual timer, simple language, repetition, frequent breaks, carpet squares (for personal space), multi sensory lessons, preferential seating
Accommodations and resources for ADHD:
-Thera-bands, wiggle cushion, trackers, highlighting, pair with a buddy, break cards, proximity seating, suggested breaks, standing while engaging, have child repeat back, multi sensory lessons
Accommodations and resources for Learning Disability:
-white boards, pair with a buddy, highlighting text, trackers, scribing, large print/big book bibles, repeating back, multi-sensory lessons
